A Letter from the Chairman

To: Indiana Business Owners and Managers
Dear Fellow Business Leader:
I am writing not only as Chairman of the Indiana Employers Quality Health Alliance but also as one who
has had a significant interest in business and policy issues during my tenure in the Indiana Senate, as
Lieutenant Governor, and as President of Lilly Endowment and PSI.
Health care quality and cost are major issues confronting the State of Indiana generally and its business
corporations specifically. This is particularly true of small and medium sized employers. Existing
alternatives for addressing this issue have not proved successful in alleviating the problem. Many
employers are asking their employees to shoulder more of the financial burden, are considering
terminating employee health coverage altogether, or are beginning to look with more interest toward a
nationalized health care system.
I believe there is another alternative, one that will use the strengths of the market and the independent
sector to constrain health costs effectively over time. This approach has been developed by the Indiana
Employers Quality Health Alliance. To be effective, it will require support from a substantial number
of employers. For that reason, Dr. Lamkin, President of the Alliance, is making presentations of the
plan to employers around the State.
The purpose of this mailing is to invite you to join other employers in your geographic area at one of
these presentations. Greater detail about your meeting is enclosed with this letter.
I would like to encourage you personally and strongly to make every effort to have the CEO and/or
CFO of your business attend this presentation. You will be under no obligation. But, if you agree this
initiative is one worth supporting, you may express that support at the meeting.
If you have any questions about this activity, feel free to contact Dr. Lamkin as noted in the enclosed
material. Thank you for your consideration and for your willingness to attend a presentation.
Sincerely,
John M. Mutz, Chairman
Indiana Employers Quality Health Alliance
